Stress Less with Fun

Have you ever thought about the amount of fun you have in a day? No, it’s not a waste of time. You may think to yourself, why bother? Having fun and being playful decreases your stress. Laughter releases dopamine which helps you feel good. When you feel good, you’ll be less stressed and more motivated when you want to accomplish something. You may feel like you are so busy or overwhelmed that you forget to pause and have fun. When was the last time you sang in the car, on a walk, in your kitchen, or in the shower?

Fun comes in many forms. Think back to when you were a child. Did you enjoy going on swings, sliding, playing in the dirt, tagging a friend, or playing a sport? Some people prefer to engage with others for fun while others enjoy time alone. Either way it is fine if you are taking a break from what needs to be done to enjoy yourself.

You may feel overwhelmed that you do not have enough time. Time stress may impact your perspective to be able to think about doing something fun. You should think about having fun in time increments. It could start with five minutes or fifteen minutes. Depending on the day, you could dedicate an entire day to having fun. You do not need to wait for a vacation or specific time off.

When you think about having fun, you could come up with ideas for indoor fun and outdoor fun. Here are some ideas.

To do indoors: dance, sing, play a board game, read a book, do a craft, bake, cook, play with play dough

Getting outdoors: go for a walk or run, ride a bike, boating on a lake, go to a playground to swing or slide, plant flowers, blow bubbles, fly a kite, skip rocks, fish, catch or kick a ball
